"I was diagnosed with cancer and started radiation therapy in New York, January 2018. On the weekends, when I wasn’t getting radiation therapy, we would sometimes visit my wife’s grandmother in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. We would sit in her tiny, ancient, rent-controlled apartment listening to her stories about coming to America and life in old New York.

She would show us black and white photos of people and places from her life and share fascinating stories. This juxtaposition of nostalgia and the unbelievable pain and uncertainty of cancer created an unfamiliar emotion.

I was listening to a lot of dub techno to calm myself after treatments and to help me sleep through the pain. I was also watching series like ‘The Alienist’ and became interested in Victorian era photos and architecture depicting the life and struggle in New York. I started to feel as if I lived a past life there.

All of these experiences and interests were combining in my head when it was suggested to me by a dear friend that I should make a dub techno album. I channeled all of these feelings, experiences, and stories into one cathartic purge, the ashhen project."
